About ceramic tile regrouting

Regrouting, done the right way.

Regrouting replaces failed grout — cracked, crumbling, missing, mouldy or permanently discoloured — across a tiled floor or wall. The old grout is raked out to a safe depth, the joints cleaned, and fresh grout (cement, or a stain-proof epoxy) packed in and tooled to a consistent line. Where the grout is sound but ugly, recolouring seals it to one clean shade instead.

The ceramic tile body is porous but sealed by its glaze; problems concentrate at the grout and at any spots where the glaze has crazed or worn. Because ceramic is softer than porcelain/vitrified, its glaze can be genuinely abraded in doorways and kitchens, which no cleaning will bring back.

The process

How ceramic tile regrouting works.

Step 01

Assess

We check whether the grout can be cleaned, recoloured, or needs full removal, and whether any tiles are loose and must be re-bedded first.

Step 02

Rake out

Failed grout is cut out with the right blade to a safe depth without chipping tile edges; joints are vacuumed and cleaned.

Step 03

Re-grout

New grout — colour of your choice, epoxy for wet and high-stain areas — is packed, tooled and cleaned off the tile face before it hazes.

Step 04

Seal / caulk

Cement grout is sealed; internal corners and tile-to-fixture joints are done in flexible caulk, not grout, so they do not re-crack.

Why it's worth doing

The result you get.

  • A tiled floor looks new again without replacing a single tile
  • Stops water getting under the tiles through failed joints
  • Epoxy grout option that never stains or grows mould
  • Consistent colour and line across the whole floor
  • Movement joints caulked correctly so cracking does not return

When you need it

Is this the right service?

Regrout when grout is cracked, powdery, missing in places, blackened with mould, or so discoloured that cleaning and recolouring will not save it — and always if tiles sound hollow or water is getting underneath.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions, answered.

Do you have to remove all the old grout?

Only the grout that has failed. Sound grout that is just discoloured can be cleaned and recoloured, which is faster and cheaper. We assess and recommend the minimum that will actually last.

My ceramic tile has grey, cracked, missing or mouldy grout — can regrouting fix that?

Yes — that is exactly what regrouting addresses on ceramic tile. We confirm the cause on the free site visit and quote the fix in writing. Regrout when grout is cracked, powdery, missing in places, blackened with mould, or so discoloured that cleaning and recolouring will not save it — and always if tiles sound hollow or water is getting underneath.

How do I keep my ceramic tile looking good afterwards?

The essentials: clean with pH-neutral cleaner; skip the strong acids and bleaches that erode grout; ventilate bathrooms to keep grout mould down. We leave you a written care plan for the specific finish.
