Kota Stone Flooring Cost in India: What to Expect

Kota stone is one of the cheapest hard floors you can lay in India, which is exactly why it's everywhere — homes, offices, staircases, back-of-house areas. But "cheap to lay" and "cheap to finish well" are two different things, and most of the cost variation people ask about is actually in the polishing, not the raw stone.

What moves the price

  • Slab thickness and grade. Kota stone is sold by thickness (commonly 18–25mm) and grade — a better, more uniform grade with fewer pin-holes costs more but polishes to a cleaner finish.
  • Laying vs. polishing. Laying new Kota stone is priced separately from grinding and polishing an already-laid floor. A newly laid floor is usually rougher and needs a full grind; an old, dull floor needs a re-polish, which can be cheaper if there's no deep damage.
  • Pin-hole and joint filling. Kota's natural pin-holes have to be slurry-filled with colour-matched grout during grinding, or the polish looks pitted — this labour step is part of any proper polishing quote.
  • Finish level. A basic satin finish is quicker than a full high-gloss polish, which needs more passes through the grit sequence.
  • Area and access — the same rule as every stone job: larger continuous areas cost less per square foot than small, broken-up rooms and staircases.

Why a "cheap" Kota polish often isn't

The single biggest false economy in Kota stone work is skipping the slurry-fill step to save time. It leaves a shiny-looking but pitted, pinholed surface that traps dirt and water, looks patchy within months, and has to be re-done properly — at which point you've paid twice. A fair quote always includes filling as part of the grind, not as an optional extra.

What a fair quote looks like

  • The area measured and how
  • Whether pin-hole and joint slurry-filling is included
  • The finish level — satin or full gloss
  • Whether sealing is included (Kota should always be sealed after polishing)
  • A day-by-day schedule

Kota stone is also non-slip by nature when finished correctly — a floor polished to too high a gloss without the right grit endpoint can become genuinely slippery, so ask what final grit and finish is planned, especially for staircases and wet areas.
